Renovating an Apartment Building: Tips

I had always wanted to be an entrepreneur, so when I saw a local apartment building up for sale at a great price, I decided make the investment. I am a manager by day, so I thought I was ready to be a great landlord. After I had trouble attracting new tenants, I decided to try investing in a few upgrades to see if I could attract more tenants with the added features. I hired a local contractor to work on my first project, which was a fitness room. I remembered that I always looked for buildings with them when I rented apartments! I then had some work done on the grounds and in the apartments themselves. The building is completely full now, so I realized it was a good investment. I decided to start a blog to share my renovating and construction tips with anyone who needs them!

Selecting A Garage Door That's Energy Efficient

If you have an attached garage, it is a significant portion of your home's structure that also shares an interior wall. Keeping your garage well insulated will help reduce your home's heating and cooling costs year-round, while also making your home feel more comfortable. Having proper insulation starts with the garage door though, which is why you should consider following these tips for selecting a quality garage door.

Select The Proper Garage Door Style

There are two styles that a garage door will come in, which include a carriage style door and a rolling door. A carriage door is made with two doors that have a resemblance to French doors. A rolling door is the common style that you see used in most homes, with horizontal panels that are attached with hinges. A carriage style door will be more energy efficient, since it has a single joint and seals better around the door jambs.

Skip Using Glass In The Door

Adding glass to a garage door may look great, but the material is a very poor insulator. This especially true when compared to the materials that garage doors are typically made out of, which include fiberglass and wood. If you insist on putting glass in your garage door, do not skimp on the material be selecting single pane glass. Upgrading to double pane glass will be more energy efficient.

Select The Garage Doors Insulation Carefully

It's common for garage doors to use foam insulation sheets, but you are not limited to just that type of insulation. Consider selecting a garage door insulated with polyurethane. The material expands when it is installed, which will make sure all of the gaps in your garage door are sealed.

Pay Attention To Weatherstripping

Doors are prone to having gaps that cause air to leak around the door's perimeter. If you want to ensure your garage door has great energy efficiency, pay attention to the weatherstripping.

A carriage style door will have a seal that locks where the door joints meet, and a rolling door will have a seal that locks along the bottom. Locking seals are the best type of weatherstripping, with rubber constructed brush or bulb seals not being very effective.
